Child
Care Ministry
For over
ten years, the child care ministry of Speedway United Methodist
Church has been providing a loving, safe environment where
children can learn and have fun. Our director Anita Holmes
has decades of experience in education as a former teacher
and administrator for IPS. She leads a staff of over 30 competent
and compassionate teachers and assistants in serving 130
children.
The
Children's Day: We
provide a cold breakfast, a hot lunch and an afternoon
snack. All children have periods of play time, learning
time and afternoon naps.
We do
not just 'baby sit' the children. We use the A-Beka curriculum
in all classes. This is a Christian-themed, age-appropriate
teaching program based on phonics. Our program is not denominationally
specific but rather is based on beliefs held in common
by all major Christian communions. At specific times during
the year (such as Advent and Lent) the pastoral staff conducts
chapel services for children.
Beyond
the faith-based learning materials, our children are exposed
to a wide variety of learning activities through arts and
crafts, music classes, field trips and guest presentations.
Pre-K and Kindergarten children have computer classes and
musical instruction in addition to the traditional academic classes.
Extra
curricular activities include tap, ballet and tumbling.
Summer
Camp Program: Each
summer the child care ministry expands to include school aged
children. Each summer there
is a special theme and guest presenter along with many
field trips and special activities.
Parent's
Involvement: The
active parent group sponsors an annual "Spring Fling" with
games appropriate for small children, a silent auction
and a delicious dinner. The annual "Hop-a-thon" raises
funds which help keep the tuition costs low. Each March,
the children turn into 'frogs' and have a great time
trying to reach their hopping goals!

through 6 (Kindergarten classes); Summer Camp is age 2 through 5th grade.
