Welcome to Speedway United Methodist Child Care Ministry.

Our goal is to provide quality care and education to the children entrusted to us.  The program emphasizes strengthening, not substituting for, the family’s child-rearing capacities.

Each program offers stability in setting and staffing that gives the child needed security while offering a rich environment to stimulate the child. We strive to develop good communication between staff and parents. At the same time, we are resourceful and adaptable to the individual needs of the child.

We accept and appreciate the child’s culture, customs, and languages. The program provides for the health protection of the children while meeting their physical, emotional, and social communication needs. We effectively monitor each child’s development.

We are a “Paths to Quality” Level 1 (close to Level 2) Program and working towards returning to our pre-COVID “Paths to Quality” Level 3 status. We accept CCDF and On My Way Pre-K programs.

Our Programs

Our two-year-olds learn about our Abeka curriculum and begin Indiana Foundations in this class. Building their sense of self, the physical and social world and creative arts with colors, music and dance along with early language and sounds are some fun ways we help our smallest children learn.

Our 2½ – 3-year-olds continue to learn faith-based Abeka learning and principles and expand upon early reading, early writing, numeracy, building relationships with their friends, science, citizenship, the arts, and health and well-being. Early communication with letters and sounds and early math skills are highlighted.

Our 3 to 4-year-olds increase their learning of these academic resources based on Biblical values. Students learn, apply and master increasingly complex concepts and skills of the Abeka curriculum and the Indiana Foundations in preparation for pre-Kindergarten: Language Arts, Mathematics, Conflict resolution.

Pre-Kindergarten Class

Continuing to grow intellectually, morally and spiritually is our goal for our 4-5 year olds in the Pre-K class. Developing, achieving and even exceeding kindergarten readiness skills for some children will provide a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning is our goal in this age group.

Hear from other families like yours!

“Speedway United Methodist Church Child Care means so much to our family. It’s the one of the few faith-based chid cares in Speedway that are open 12 hours/day for working parents with early or late hours.. The teachers are passionate and caring. Both of my children were VERY prepared for Kindergarten after their pre-K program.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What are your hours of operation?

We are open from 6:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. for parents with early and late work shifts. We are not open on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Carburation Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Two in-service days per calendar year – dates to be announced

What if I am late picking my child up?

Please call 317-241-1049 if you know you are going to be late picking up your child.

A late pickup with NO CALL will be a $10.00 fee in addition to the fees listed below.

Beginning 6:01 p.m., late fees will be assessed at $1.00 per minute.

A late pickup form must be signed by the person who picks up the child with the time, date, and the child’s name.

What should my child bring?

Two complete clothing changes in a labeled sack so we may keep it here in case of an accident. (Please change as the seasons change).

  • Sleep bags are available for $7.50 as children will need a small blanket and travel pillow (clearly marked) for nap time (no pillow pets, please!)
  • Blankets and pillows must be taken home on Friday to be laundered and returned on Monday.

What is the toileting and bathroom use policy?

All children age three and older must be toilet trained before they may be enrolled. Occasional accidents are understandable, but a child with repeated toileting accidents may be placed on probation or discharged.

If your child is under two and not toilet trained, please send a sufficient supply of disposable diapers and baby wipes for the day.

Please communicate medical conditions which may cause excessive use of the bathroom. A doctor’s statement may also be required.

Each class has scheduled restroom times when all the children are taken to the restroom. To use the restroom at other times, your child only needs to ask the teacher.

Children in pre-K are expected to take care of their toilet needs independently.

Is there a religious influence at SUMC Child Care?

Yes. We are a Christian faith-based child care. The children will be required to attend Worship with our pastor weekly on Wednesdays, but we invite and welcome children and families from all backgrounds, cultures, and religions. Please see below for our Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy regarding Students.

We also currently use the Abeka curriculum, which IS a Christian-based curriculum. Children are taught reverence for God and God’s home.

What should my child wear?

Pre-K children are required to wear uniforms, school shirts, or plain shirts and plain colored pants or skirts. All other children should wear play clothes that allow for freedom of movement, ability to get dirt, paint, glue, etc. on them. Please label all articles of clothing.

Children should wear tennis shoes – flip-flops or sandals are not allowed. Mittens, gloves, and hats should be pinned to the coat.

Each child is assigned a designated space (cubby) for his or her personal belongings.

Speedway United Methodist Church Child Care will NOT be responsible for any article of clothing or property lost or stolen.

What is your curriculum?

Each class is set up to provide a variety of learning experiences appropriate to the child’s age. The child’s development is encouraged through a variety of learning activity areas in the classrooms.

You will see areas that emphasize Math, Science, Language Arts, Music & Movement, Art, Social Emotional Development, and Gross & Fine Motor skill development.

We currently use the Abeka curriculum, which is Christian-based, but re-evaluate this curriculum annually to see if any other Christian-based curricula are also recommended.

How do Parents and Teachers communicate?

Teachers can communicate with parents via phone, e-mail, or text. While the teachers are available at certain times of the day to answer your questions, the teacher’s first responsibility is always to the children. State regulations and the safety of the children require that teachers do not leave their area to take phone calls during class time. If you wish to speak with a teacher, the office will take a message and have the teacher call you back when he or she is available.

Child Care updates and info and special events (e.g., Open House, Christmas program, graduation program, field trips, etc.) are communicated through paper newsletters and Monthly Calendars.

Parent Teacher Conferences are held at least yearly (usually in January). We encourage all parents to make an appointment to talk with their child’s teacher and to check on their child’s progress.

Parents can also follow our child care on Facebook. Faces of children in photos may be hidden if the parent has not signed a photo release form.

Who regulates SUMC Child Care?

We are a “Paths to Quality” Level 1 (close to Level 2) Program and are working towards our goal of returning to our pre-COVID “Paths to Quality” Level 3 status.

We accept CCDF and On My Way Pre-K programs. Our food follows federal guidelines.

We are regulated by the State of Indiana, which requires a full health record with a physical examination and history of immunizations on file for each child.

All employees must have background checks, a TB test, a drug test, and a physical exam. Employees must also complete a proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.

Can I observe or visit my child’s classroom?

Absolutely! You are welcome to visit your child’s class at any time and are encouraged to do so.

SUMC Child Care provides many opportunities for Family Involvement Activities throughout the year, including picnics, open houses, a Christmas program, the Little 500 mini-trike race in May, the Fourth of July parade, etc. We hope you will be able to attend all of these events so your child can receive the full benefit of our program.

We also encourage parent involvement in our annual “Hop-a-thon” each March. March is the month for frogs! Our children and teachers wear green and anything “froggy” they can find. Pledges are solicited from friends and family, and the children “hop” to earn money for the child care.
