Founded in 1948, the first worship services were held in a variety of locations throughout the town of Speedway. From the former “Speedway Movie Theater,” previously located on North Main Street, to the gymnasium of what is now the Speedway Junior High School, the Farley Funeral Home, and the C.I.O. Union Hall, the congregation ultimately found its home on 16th Street, when ground was purchased and construction of the Speedway United Methodist Church (SUMC) commenced. On September 27, 1953, the Chapel was consecrated, and the Sanctuary was completed by 1960 in response to a growing congregation. More recently, the Sanctuary was renovated in 2005 to provide for more modern forms of worship.

Over the years, Speedway United Methodist Church has responded to God’s call in many ways. When a need for quality child care for working parents was identified in 1997, Speedway United Methodist Child Care Ministry was formed. This ministry has successfully adapted to the needs of an ever-changing community, earning recognition as a “Pathways to Quality” site with the help of the United Way and receiving a certificate from the State of Indiana and the Family and Social Services Administration for achievement. Utilizing the world-renowned Christian based curriculum, Abeka, the child care ministry remains strong today.

Recently, when Casa de Dios, a United Methodist Spanish speaking congregation needed a place to meet, Speedway UMC welcomed them with open arms. In addition to sharing the church, the two congregations occasionally worship as one and conduct special events, like Vacation Bible School, together.

Acts like these showcase a variety of ways Speedway UMC utilizes its ministries to compassionately help our neighbors and reach our community. God continues to challenge and empower the SUMC congregation to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. In today’s fast-paced world with many distractions, people may find acceptance and hope here at Speedway United Methodist Church.
