Serve at Speedway UMC

The people of Speedway United Methodist Church are engaged in our community through many opportunities of service. Join us in making a difference in the lives of the people of Speedway and beyond.

An interdenominational, non-profit, Christian Partnership affiliated with the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church dedicated to rural life in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Our youth strive to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of the people through the love of Christ by working alongside the residents of the Cumberland Mountains & by providing Summer Day Camp for the local kids. Our Youth ages 13 to 21 and a few adults have been participating since Mountain T.O.P.’s very first year in 1975. We are the only church in the organization’s history that has participated every year!

Family Promise is a partnership of congregations and community organizations responding to the crisis of children and their families who are homeless. They work to eliminate homelessness in Greater Indianapolis. Three weeks per year, Speedway UMC hosts four families in need, utilizing church resources.

During the 2018 Lenten season, we collected over 600 pairs of shoes to donate to Changing Footprints, a non-profit organization that distributes new and gently-used shoes to homeless, disaster-stricken, or underprivileged people locally, nationally, and internationally and converts badly damaged shoes into playgrounds.  We are excited about continuing this project on an annual basis to support Changing Footprints’ mission of realizing the great need for shoes around the world as protection from diseases and a gateway to education.

Our volunteers make weekly visits to the residents of the Northwest Healthcare Center on West 34th street while delivering much-anticipated banana or cookie treats.

Every year, Speedway UMC helps three or more Wayne Township families who are facing difficult times by supplying Christmas gifts for the entire family.

Yearly, we furnish eight to ten Wayne Township families with enough groceries to prepare their entire Thanksgiving meals.

Each Christmas season, Speedway UMC decorates our bare tree with donations of hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, etc. The winter accessories collected are then given to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Lebanon and Allison Elementary School in Speedway.

Annually, we invite our local Speedway first responders to a hearty homemade breakfast to express our gratitude for all that they do. The children of the church and the child care ministry shower them with cards, banners, and admiration. We also take lunch twice each year to officers in the Northwest and Southwest police districts to show our appreciation.

After the second worship service each Sunday, the altar flowers are delivered to people who are ill, recuperating, or unable to leave their home in hopes of brightening their day and expressing our heartfelt concern and love.
